As of 17 Oct 2026, the official temple portal lists the Bhasma Aarti time as 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM every day, in summer and in winter. The portal gives no reporting time. Booked devotees commonly report around 2:30–3:00 AM, but always follow the time printed on your permit.

This guide covers the Bhasma Aarti at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain, the temple beside the Shipra River. A June 2026 temple administration order, reported by Free Press Journal, allows Bhasma Aarti entry only through Neelkanth Gate. Follow your permit and the staff on the day. Special days can shift the clock, as the Shravan-Bhadon 2026 schedule did. That season is now over.

The aarti runs for about two hours, from 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM. Entry is by an online permit booked on the portal. General darshan is separate and does not need a Bhasma Aarti permit. When you are ready to book Bhasma Aarti online, the step-by-step guide walks through the official process.

The ash used in the ritual is traditionally made from cow-dung cakes (Gau-Upla). It is offered by the Mahant of Shri Panchayati Akhada Mahanirvani or an authorised representative, as the portal describes.

Why Websites Show 4 AM, 3 AM or 2:30 AM

Search for the Bhasma Aarti timing and you will see three different start times. Each one has a source behind it. Only one is the regular daily time.

The regular schedule: 4:00 to 6:00 AM

The official portal timing table lists Bhasma Aarti at 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM. MP Tourism’s Bhasma Aarti guide (published 2020) also gives a 4 AM start. So two government sources agree on the regular Ujjain Bhasma Aarti time.

Some older pages show an end time of 5:30 AM or 5:45 AM. The portal says 6:00 AM, so use that.

Shravan-Bhadon 2026: what changed and when it ended

Shravan is the season of the Mahakal Sawari processions. Free Press Journal published the announced Shravan-Bhadon 2026 schedule in a report updated 12 Jul 2026.

Under that schedule, doors were to open at 3 AM daily from 30 July to 7 September 2026. On Mondays, doors were to open at 2:30 AM, with Bhasma Aarti from 2:30 to 4:30 AM. Regular timings were to resume from 8 September.

Dainik Bhaskar’s English site reported that doors opened around 2:30 AM on the final Shravan Monday (report dated 24 Aug 2026). That season is over. As of 17 Oct 2026, the schedule for next year has not been announced, so do not plan around these times.

Reporting times mistaken for start times

Many guides say booked devotees should report around 2:30–3:00 AM. Some pages then print that window as the aarti time itself. Other guides quote 1–2 AM or 3:30 AM, often with no date or source.

Special schedules were also often copied as if they were permanent. The fix is simple: treat 4:00 AM as the aarti start, and treat any earlier time as a reporting window.

Does the Timing Change in Summer, Winter or on Festivals?

Short answer: the Bhasma Aarti does not move with the seasons, but some other aartis do.

Two seasons on the portal, one Bhasma Aarti time

The portal splits the year by the Hindu calendar, not by English months. One half runs from Chaitra Krishna Pratipada to Ashwin Purnima. The other runs from Kartik Krishna Pratipada to Phalgun Purnima.

Only three aartis shift between the halves: Dadyodak Aarti, Bhog Aarti and Sandhya Aarti. The Bhasma Aarti (4:00–6:00 AM) and the Shayan Aarti (10:30–11:00 PM) stay the same all year.

Season decoder: what moves and what stays (portal, checked 17 Oct 2026)
Aarti Chaitra Krishna Pratipada to Ashwin Purnima Kartik Krishna Pratipada to Phalgun Purnima
Bhasma Aarti 4:00–6:00 AM 4:00–6:00 AM
Dadyodak Aarti (Bal Bhog) 7:00–7:45 AM 7:30–8:15 AM
Bhog Aarti 10:00–10:45 AM 10:30–11:15 AM
Sandhya Aarti 7:00–7:45 PM 6:30–7:15 PM
Shayan Aarti 10:30–11:00 PM 10:30–11:00 PM

The switch follows a tithi, so its English date changes each year. Check the portal near the change. Your Bhasma Aarti time is the same either way. For the other daily timings, see the full Mahakal darshan timings.

Mondays, Mahashivratri and Nag Panchami

Regular Mondays: the portal shows no separate Monday time, so the Mahakal Bhasm Aarti time stays at 4:00 AM. The 2:30 AM Monday time belonged to the Shravan-Bhadon 2026 schedule only.

Mahashivratri: after the night Mahapuja and Sehra Darshan, a once-a-year afternoon Bhasma Aarti is performed, as the portal festival text says. The portal does not give a clock time for it. See the Mahakal festival dates for 2026 before you travel.

Nag Panchami: the Nagchandreshwar Temple on the third storey of the complex opens only on Nag Panchami, per Wikipedia. This guide has no sourced change to the Bhasma Aarti time for that day. Check the portal close to the date.

Bhasma Aarti Reporting Time and Entry Gate

The aarti time is official. The reporting time and the gate are not.

What the official portal does and does not say

The official portal does not publish a Bhasma Aarti reporting time or an entry gate (as of 17 Oct 2026). Your permit may carry its own instructions, and those come first.

The Bhasma Aarti reporting time is commonly given as about 2:30–3:00 AM. That is practice, not an official rule. Madhya Pradesh Tourism’s 2020 guide advises arriving “an hour or even before” the start. For the Bhasma Aarti entry time, follow the time on your permit.

Which gate to use

Free Press Journal (5 Jun 2026) reported a surprise inspection at the temple. After it, the temple administration ordered that Bhasma Aarti entry be allowed only through Neelkanth Gate. Gates can change by day or festival. Follow your permit and the on-site staff on the day.

Carry these with you:

  • Your Bhasma Aarti permit for the right date.
  • The same photo ID you used when booking. Read the ID proof rules before you leave.
  • Clothes that meet the Bhasma Aarti dress code. MP Tourism (2020) mentions dhoti for men and saree for women for the inner sanctum.

Mobile phones are not allowed inside the main temple premises, as Free Press Journal reported in April 2025. Use the deposit counters and check the current setup on arrival.

Which Date Is My Permit For?

The aarti on your permit happens in the early morning of the printed date. If your permit says 20 November, the aarti is at 4:00 AM on 20 November.

So you need to be near the temple in the small hours of that date. Plan to reach Ujjain the evening before and stay the night. Think of it as “night of D-1, aarti on the morning of D.”

Read your own permit carefully. If anything is unclear, call the temple helpdesk on 18002331008, the number listed on the portal.

If You Are Late or Miss the Bhasma Aarti

The portal shows no official rule on late entry or a closing time. Do not count on being let in late. Plan to reach well before 4:00 AM.

If you do miss it, you still have options the same day:

  • Sandhya Aarti: booking opens daily at 12:00 PM on the portal, first come first served.
  • Shayan Aarti: booking opens daily at 4:00 PM on the portal, first come first served. See the Shayan Aarti guide.
  • Seated places: Amar Ujala (15 Apr 2026) reported ₹250 per seat for Sandhya and Shayan seated participation. Confirm on the portal.
  • General darshan: the same report says free chalit darshan continues as before.

These options do not replace the Bhasma Aarti, but they still let you have darshan the same day. If you cannot get back to the temple, see Mahakal live darshan.

How to Get a Seat for That Time

The time only helps if you hold a permit for that date.

Regular and Tatkal booking windows

Regular booking opens on the 1st of the previous month at 8:00 AM, per the portal. So bookings for a June date open on 1 May. Amar Ujala reported on 15 Apr 2026 that this window was cut from three months to one month. That is why older pages still talk about booking three months ahead.

Tatkal booking opens one day before your chosen date at 8:00 AM. Since 9 April 2026 it has been online only, on the official website. The offline counter was discontinued, as Amar Ujala and The Sootr reported. Read more about the Tatkal booking window.

Fees and limits reported in 2026

The Tatkal fee is ₹200 per devotee for the one-day-prior Tatkal quota, as reported by Amar Ujala (15 Apr 2026). The Sootr (15 Apr 2026) also reports a ₹200 charge. Confirm the amount at checkout on the portal. This guide has no sourced fee for regular booking.

The same Amar Ujala report described about 1,700 permissions a day. Of these, 300 earlier went through the offline counter and now go to online Tatkal. That is the figure from the April 2026 report, not a current daily limit.

Dainik Jagran (22 Jun 2026) reported a cap of one permit per mobile number every three months. For help, the temple helpdesk is 18002331008.

Booking assistance from this site only explains the official process. It cannot secure, reserve or speed up a permit. Every booking ends on the official portal.

How We Checked These Timings

Timings on this page were checked against the official portal timing table and dated press reports on 17 Oct 2026. Press reports are cited with their dates. Items that are not official are labelled as press or advice.

This guide is written by Kshitij Kumawat, an Ujjain local guide since 2023. Timings and fees change, so check the portal before you travel. If you want everything on paper, the full night-before checklist is in the Mahakal Playbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Bhasma Aarti time at Mahakaleshwar?

The official temple portal lists the Bhasma Aarti at 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM every day, as checked on 17 Oct 2026. The time is the same in both halves of the year, summer and winter. Special days, such as the Shravan-Bhadon season or Mahashivratri, can follow a separate schedule, so check the portal before you travel.

What time should I reach for Bhasma Aarti?

The official portal does not publish a reporting time. Booked devotees commonly report around 2:30 to 3:00 AM, but this is practice, not an official rule. Follow the time printed on your permit first. MP Tourism’s 2020 guide also advises arriving an hour or more before the 4:00 AM start.

Does Bhasma Aarti time change on Mondays or in Sawan?

Regular Mondays show no separate time on the portal. The announced Shravan-Bhadon 2026 schedule, from 30 July to 7 September 2026, had doors opening at 3 AM daily and 2:30 AM on Mondays, with the Monday aarti from 2:30 to 4:30 AM. That season has ended, and next year’s schedule had not been announced as of 17 Oct 2026.

Is the Bhasma Aarti on my permit date in the morning or the night before?

It is in the early morning of the date printed on your permit, starting at 4:00 AM. So you need to travel or stay in Ujjain the night before. Read your own permit carefully. If anything is unclear, call the temple helpdesk on 18002331008, the number listed on the official portal.

What can I do if I miss the Bhasma Aarti?

You can book a later aarti the same day. On the portal, Sandhya Aarti booking opens at 12:00 PM and Shayan Aarti booking at 4:00 PM, first come first served. Amar Ujala reported ₹250 per seat for seated places in April 2026, so confirm on the portal. Free general darshan also continues, per the same report.
