Mahakal Festivals 2026-27: Sawari, Shivratri, Simhastha

Sawan 2027 Mahakal sawari dates at Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Ujjain, are expected on the Shravan Mondays 19 Jul–16 Aug 2027 plus the Bhadrapada Mondays; the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee announces the list around June–July. Before that, Mahakal ki sawari returns in Kartik after Diwali (8 Nov 2026), with Harihar Milan on 23 Nov and Mahashivratri on 6 Mar 2027.

Nag Panchami falls on Fri 6 Aug 2027, Simhastha 2028 is planned for March–May 2028 (CM statement, June 2026; official calendar awaited), and the 2026 sawari season ran 3 Aug to 7 Sep.

Next Mahakal festival and sawari dates at a glance (2026-27)

This Mahakal festival calendar runs from Kartik 2026 to Sawan 2027 and ends with the Simhastha 2028 window. Every row carries a label: confirmed means the date is fixed by the panchang, expected means it follows the temple’s usual pattern but has not been announced, and TBA means no date yet.

Announcement pattern: the Sawan sawari list comes out around June–July, three to six weeks before Shravan; the Kartik–Agahan list around Diwali; the Shiv Navratri schedule in early February.

How the Mahakal sawari works: 4 PM, Ram Ghat and back

Every sawari follows one script. After pujan in the Sabha Mandap, the utsav murti (the festival image of Mahakal) leaves the temple at 4:00 PM, as the News On AIR report on the 2026 Shahi Sawari recorded. The procession goes out past Mahakal Lok, Gudri Chauraha, Bakshi Bazaar and Kaharwadi to Ram Ghat on the Shipra, and the Shahi Sawari returns by a longer loop through Sarafa, Chhatri Chowk, Gopal Mandir and Patni Bazaar.

At Ram Ghat the forms are given abhishek with Shipra water. In 2026 the regular Mondays carried Chandramouleshwar in a palanquin, Manmahesh on an elephant, Shiv Tandav on a Garuda chariot and, from the fourth sawari, Uma-Mahesh on a Nandi chariot. The last sawari of the season is the Shahi Sawari, when Mahakal appears in seven forms. The Mahakal sawari time is the same 4 PM in Sawan and in Kartik; only the return hour differs.

Sawan 2026 sawari record and the expected Sawan 2027 Mondays

Sawan 2026: six sawaris, 3 Aug to 7 Sep

Shravan 2026 began late, on 30 Jul, so the Mahakal sawari 2026 season ran through August and into September. The committee scheduled a procession on every Shravan Monday and on the first two Bhadrapada Mondays, six in all, with the Shahi Sawari on the last one.

The temple changed its clock for the whole season. From 30 Jul to 7 Sep 2026 the doors opened at 3:00 AM daily and at 2:30 AM on Mondays, with the Monday Bhasma Aarti at 2:30–4:30 AM (Free Press Journal, 30 Jul 2026). During every aarti, chalit (moving) darshan ran from the first three rows of the Kartik Mandapam, and Kanwar Yatra pilgrims could offer water to Mahakal from Tuesday to Friday. Sawan 2027: expected Mondays (not yet announced)

Sawan 2027 (Purnimanta) runs 19 Jul–17 Aug 2027 (Drik Panchang). The lunar shift matters: Shravan started on 30 Jul in 2026 but starts on 19 Jul in 2027, so the whole season moves about eleven days earlier.

If the committee follows the 2026 pattern of every Shravan Monday plus the first two Bhadrapada Mondays, sawaris are expected on 19 Jul, 26 Jul, 2 Aug, 9 Aug and 16 Aug 2027, and then on the Bhadrapada Mondays, with the Shahi Sawari on one of them. The committee announces the list around June–July; treat every 2027 date as expected until then.

Side by side: 2026 ran 3 Aug–7 Sep; 2027 is expected to start on 19 Jul, so the July booking window opens on 1 Jun 2027 (rules as of Oct 2026).

Kartik 2026 at Mahakal: Diwali, Annakoot, Kartik-Agahan sawaris and Harihar Milan

These are the only dated temple events in the next two months.

Diwali and Annakoot (8-10 Nov 2026)

Diwali is Sun 8 Nov 2026 and Annakoot (Govardhan Puja) is Tue 10 Nov 2026 (Drik Panchang). On Diwali morning the Bhasma Aarti includes an abhyang snan: Mahakal is bathed with ubtan and Panchamrit, lamps are lit by the women of the priest families, and a 56-bhog Annakoot of kheer, dal-baati and puri is offered (pattern reported by Free Press Journal). It stays in the usual pre-dawn slot; no time change is announced; check the portal. Since Diwali 2025 only one symbolic sparkler is lit per aarti and other fireworks are not allowed inside (Patrika, Oct 2025).

Kartik-Agahan sawari Mondays (expected after Diwali)

After Diwali the sawari returns for a shorter run on the Mondays of Kartik Shukla paksha and Agahan (Margashirsha) Krishna paksha. In 2024 these left at 4 PM and were back by about 7 PM (Patrika). The 2026 list is expected to be published around Diwali; this page will carry the dates once the committee does, so do not plan around a guessed Monday.

Harihar Milan: night of 23 Nov 2026

The Harihar Milan Ujjain procession is the one night in the year when Mahakal goes to meet Vishnu. It falls on Vaikuntha Chaturdashi, which is Mon 23 Nov 2026 (Drik Panchang); the temple confirms the local programme a few days before. At about 11 PM the procession leaves Mahakaleshwar, passes Gudri Chauraha and Patni Bazaar and reaches Gopal Mandir, Ujjain’s Krishna temple. Mahakal offers a bilva garland, Gopal offers a tulsi garland, and the charge of the world is handed over; the procession returns by the same route (Free Press Journal pattern).

Shiv Navratri and Mahashivratri 2027 (6 March)

Mahashivratri 2027 is Sat 6 Mar 2027 (Drik Panchang). At Mahakaleshwar it closes a nine-day Shiv Navratri. In 2026 Shiv Navratri ran 6–14 Feb with Mahashivratri on 15 Feb: each day had an Ekadasha Rudrabhishek by eleven Brahmins, a 3 PM puja and then a Shringar aarti (Free Press Journal, Feb 2026). Shiv Navratri 2027 is expected to run approx. 26 Feb–6 Mar 2027; the temple schedule is not announced.

On Mahashivratri Ujjain stays awake. In 2026 jalabhishek continued through the day and night puja, and on 16 Feb came the Sehra darshan followed by the Bhasma Aarti at 12 noon, the only daytime Bhasma Aarti of the year; the temple stayed open about 44 hours. The same pattern held in 2023, when over 8 lakh devotees had darshan till 8 PM (Free Press Journal). Expect the same shape in 2027 once the committee announces it, with the noon aarti on 7 Mar 2027.

Nag Panchami 2027: the one day Nagchandreshwar opens

Nagchandreshwar Temple, on the top floor of the Mahakaleshwar complex, opens once a year. On Nag Panchami Ujjain gets two crowds at once. In 2026 the day fell on Mon 17 Aug, the third Sawan Monday: Nagchandreshwar’s doors opened at midnight and did not close for 24 hours, about 4 lakh devotees had darshan there by early afternoon, and the administration ran separate entry and exit routes (News On AIR, 17 Aug 2026).

The next opening is Nag Panchami, Fri 6 Aug 2027 (Drik Panchang), inside Shravan, so Sawan door timings will apply if the committee repeats them. Queue timing and the midnight plan are on Nagchandreshwar temple on Nag Panchami.

Simhastha 2028: planned window and what it means for darshan

Simhastha 2028 is Ujjain’s Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years when Jupiter is in Leo, with bathing on the Shipra (Wikipedia). The planned window is 27 Mar–27 May 2028, according to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav in a statement reported on 27 Jun 2026, which also put the expected turnout at about 40 crore devotees over the mela (Deccan Chronicle). The official calendar and the snan dates are awaited, so treat the window as TBA. The 2016 edition ran 22 Apr–21 May. For the temple, this means the 2028 Chaitra–Vaisakha season will not look like a normal year; follow the Simhastha 2028 Ujjain guide as the plan firms up.

What changes for a Bhasma Aarti booking on each festival

Across Mahakaleshwar temple festivals the booking rule stays the same; what moves is the aarti clock and the crowd. Normally the Bhasma Aarti starts around 4:00 AM and the reporting time is printed on the permit (MP Tourism). Most Mahakal festivals leave that slot alone. Sawan and Mahashivratri do not.

How far ahead you can book for a festival (1-month rule, as of Oct 2026)

As of Oct 2026 the Bhasma Aarti permit is online-only on the official portal (since 9 Apr 2026). The regular online window opens on the 1st of the previous month at 8:00 AM, an online Tatkal quota opens at 8:00 AM the day before, and the fee is Rs 200 per person. The arithmetic for the dates above:

• Mahashivratri, 6 Mar 2027: regular booking should open on 1 Feb 2027 at 8 AM; Tatkal permit at 8 AM on 5 Mar 2027.
• First Sawan 2027 sawari Monday, 19 Jul 2027 (expected): regular booking on 1 Jun 2027 at 8 AM.
• Diwali, Harihar Milan and Kartik Purnima (8, 23, 24 Nov 2026): regular window opened on 1 Oct 2026; Tatkal the day before.

Quieter days worth knowing: Pradosh and Somvati Amavasya

Two observances are not in the table but draw larger-than-usual crowds: Pradosha (the thirteenth lunar day, twice a month) and Somvati Amavasya (a new moon that falls on a Monday). Neither changes the aarti clock, but both fill the queue.

For a first Mahakal visit, local judgment is simple: a Kartik weekday or a non-Monday in a normal month gives you the aarti with the least crush, while a Shahi Sawari day gives you the spectacle but the longest wait.
