Mahakaleshwar Temple
The reason most people come to Ujjain, Mahakaleshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the only one facing south. Its famous pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti, where the lingam is anointed with sacred ash, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Plan the visit early and keep aside a couple of hours for queues.
Mahakal Lok
This sprawling corridor leading to the Mahakaleshwar temple is lined with hundreds of statues and murals narrating Shiva legends. Beautifully lit in the evening, it has quickly become one of Ujjain’s most photographed spots. Walk it slowly before or after your darshan.
Kal Bhairav Temple
About 8 km from the centre, Kal Bhairav is the guardian deity of Ujjain and famous for one unusual ritual — liquor is offered to the deity and appears to be accepted. It is an old, atmospheric temple and a must-see for anyone curious about the city’s Tantric heritage.
Harsiddhi Shaktipeeth
One of the 51 Shaktipeeths, Harsiddhi temple is revered as the spot where a part of Goddess Sati is said to have fallen. Its two tall Deepstambhs (lamp towers), lit with rows of oil lamps during Navratri, are a stunning sight. It sits close to Ram Ghat.
Ram Ghat
The most accessible of Ujjain’s Shipra river ghats, Ram Ghat is where the evening aarti draws crowds and where Simhastha Kumbh Mela bathing takes place. Come at dusk for the lamps on the water. It is a short walk from Mahakaleshwar and Harsiddhi.
Chintaman Ganesh
Across the Shipra, this is one of the oldest Ganesh temples in the region, believed to be self-manifested. Devotees come to have their worries (chinta) removed. The peaceful setting makes it a calm contrast to the busier city temples.
Mangalnath Temple
Regarded in tradition as the birthplace of Mars (Mangal), this temple is a major centre for the Bhaat Puja and Mangal Dosh remedies in astrology. Pilgrims worried about planetary influences make a point of visiting. It also offers quiet views over the river.
Sandipani Ashram
This is where, according to legend, Lord Krishna, Balarama and Sudama studied under Guru Sandipani. The ashram has an old, serene atmosphere and a small kund. It is a meaningful stop for anyone drawn to the Krishna story.
Kaliadeh Palace
A little out of town on an island in the Shipra, this water palace blends Persian and Indian architecture and once stood on the old sun-temple site. The riverside setting is photogenic and usually uncrowded — good for a quieter, heritage-focused stop.
Gopal Mandir
Set in the bustling bazaar area, this 19th-century marble temple dedicated to Krishna is known for its silver-plated doors and fine workmanship. It is easy to combine with shopping for prasad, puja items and local sweets nearby.
ISKCON Ujjain
The Krishna-Balaram temple run by ISKCON is clean, welcoming and especially lively during aarti and festivals. Families appreciate its calm campus and the sattvic food. It rounds off a temple circuit nicely.
1-day Ujjain itinerary
- Early morning: Mahakaleshwar darshan (Bhasma Aarti if booked), then walk Mahakal Lok.
- Late morning: Harsiddhi Shaktipeeth and Ram Ghat.
- Afternoon: Kal Bhairav and Gopal Mandir with a bazaar stop.
- Evening: Return to Ram Ghat for the aarti.
2-day Ujjain itinerary
- Day 1: Mahakaleshwar, Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat, Kal Bhairav.
- Day 2: Chintaman Ganesh, Mangalnath, Sandipani Ashram, Kaliadeh Palace, Gopal Mandir and ISKCON.
With two days you can slow down, add a half-day trip such as Ujjain to Omkareshwar for a second Jyotirlinga, and avoid rushing between temples.
Best time to visit
October to March has the pleasant weather that suits temple-hopping on foot. Sawan (July–August) and Mahashivratri bring huge, devotional crowds to Mahakaleshwar — spiritually powerful but very busy. The Simhastha Kumbh, held roughly every twelve years, transforms the whole city and the ghats. Plan around festivals depending on whether you want the energy or the calm.
Getting around Ujjain
Most core temples — Mahakaleshwar, Mahakal Lok, Harsiddhi, Ram Ghat, Gopal Mandir — are within walking or short auto distance of each other. For the outer sites like Mangalnath, Kaliadeh Palace, Chintaman Ganesh and ISKCON, hire an auto for a few hours or a taxi for the day; a half-day car booking is the easiest way to cover them without backtracking. If you are still arranging your trip, see our how to reach Ujjain hub and pick a central base from our hotels near Mahakal guide.
Plan your darshan & Bhasma Aarti
Since Mahakaleshwar anchors any Ujjain visit, sort your temple timings first. Check the Mahakal darshan timings and read the full Bhasma Aarti booking guide before you travel. Please note: all official Bhasma Aarti bookings happen only on the temple portal www.shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in — we are an independent guide.
