Key takeaways

  • Tatkal opens at 8:00 AM, one day before the aarti date, per the portal's booking-information panel (check on the day).
  • Book only on www.shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in; shrimahakaleshwar.com forwards to it but is not the address to book on.
  • Press reports from April 2026 put the quota at approximately 300 permits at ₹200 per person; not confirmed on the portal.
  • Per April 2026 reports, the offline Tatkal counter is closed.
  • Treat Tatkal as upside: it opens about 20 hours before the aarti, so keep a backup from the ladder.

Tatkal Bhasma Aarti booking at a glance

Tatkal Bhasma Aarti booking opens at 8:00 AM, one day before your chosen aarti date, on the official Shri Mahakaleshwar portal. Press reports from April 2026 put the Tatkal quota at approximately 300 permits at ₹200 per person. Per those reports, there is no offline counter any more. Check the portal on the day, because figures can change.

We read the portal’s booking-information panel directly on 6 October 2026. The opening rule below comes from that panel. The quota, the fee and the offline closure come from dated news reports, and we label them that way.

This guide is independent. It is not run by the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee, and it does not sell permits. You book on the temple portal with your own mobile number and ID.

Every claim in this article carries one of three labels:

  • Verified: shown on the portal’s booking-information panel or confirmed by us on 6 Oct 2026.
  • Reported: published by a dated news outlet, not on the portal text we could read.
  • Unverified: seen only on unofficial pages with no source. We do not rely on these.

The Bhasma Aarti at the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga in Ujjain has a quota released only a day ahead. That makes it a race, and it is why wrong timings and wrong websites circulate so widely.

When Tatkal opens: the 8:00 AM, day-before rule

The portal’s booking-information panel still shows this rule: Tatkal booking opens one day before the selected date at 8:00 AM. Its own example says that for an aarti on 10 April, Tatkal opens on 9 April at 8:00 AM. The panel also says online booking is on the official website only. Check the portal on the day, since the panel carries no date.

For the regular monthly release, fee and the 90-day limit, use our Bhasma Aarti booking guide. This page covers only the Tatkal window.

Your aarti date Tatkal opens What to prepare
10 April (portal’s example) 9 April, 8:00 AM Portal open and logged in by 7:55 AM
Any date, D Day D minus 1, 8:00 AM Mobile number, Aadhaar and photo ready the night before
Tomorrow’s aarti Today, 8:00 AM Stable network, charged phone, payment app tested
Day after tomorrow Tomorrow, 8:00 AM Set an alarm; the window does not open earlier

The aarti itself starts around 4:00 AM, according to MP Tourism, and the time shifts with the season. So the 8:00 AM window opens roughly 20 hours before the aarti you are trying to attend. That is a short gap: you book at 8:00 AM and must be at the temple that same night.

Why Tatkal is upside, not your travel plan

This is our view, not a temple rule. Treat Tatkal as a bonus, not the base of your trip.

The quota is reported to fill quickly, and we have no timing data to say how quickly. The window opens about 20 hours before the aarti, so you cannot know on the morning of your travel whether you hold a permit. Do not book non-refundable transport or a stay on the assumption that you will get one.

A safer plan is to try Tatkal and have a second option ready. The backup ladder further down this page ranks those options by lead time.

Official website and what to ignore: Tatkal claims checked against the source

Search results mix correct and wrong details. The table checks the common claims against what we could read on 6 October 2026.

Claim Where you will see it What the source says Label
Tatkal opens at 8:00 AM Portal panel, April 2026 news reports The portal panel and dated press reports all say 8:00 AM, one day before Verified

Fee ₹200 per person News reports, April 2026 Reported in April 2026. Not in the portal text we could read Reported
Fee ₹350 to ₹500 Some unofficial guides Based on old rates, no source. Contradicts the April 2026 reports Unverified
About 300 Tatkal permits a day News reports, April 2026 Reported in April 2026. Current figure not confirmed Reported
Offline Tatkal counter Older pages, some Hindi snippets Reported closed from 9 April 2026, with the permits moved online Reported

The official portal address is www.shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. For the wider domain question, see which Mahakaleshwar website is official. If you are wondering about a phone app, we answer is there an official booking app separately.

Why do you see 10:00 AM elsewhere? Some unofficial pages add details with no source, and one guide gives both 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM on the same page. Use the portal, not a blog, for the time.

The offline detail also matters. Assistant Administrator Ashish Falwadia was quoted by Amar Ujala on 15 April 2026 saying online Tatkal started on 9 April and was running smoothly. Reports from that month say the old counter that issued permits the day before was closed. Some older pages still describe offline forms. Treat those as out of date.

One caution. Pay no agent who promises a Tatkal permit. The booking is yours, made with your own ID, on the portal.

Steps for Tatkal booking on the portal

These steps are hedged on purpose. The booking form sits behind the portal login, so the exact fields appear only when you reach them.

  1. The night before, open www.shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in and bookmark it. Type the address yourself. Do not tap a link from a message.
  2. Log in with your mobile number. Register first if you have not done so.
  3. Go to the Bhasma Aarti booking section and pick your date.
  4. At 8:00 AM, choose the number of permits you need. Press reports say the quota is first come, first served.
  5. Have your Aadhaar details and a clear photo ready. Press reports describe these as required. The portal shows the exact fields at booking time.
  6. Pay on the portal. Press reports put the fee at ₹200 per person (as of April 2026).
  7. Save your confirmation and permit on your phone. Check it for the aarti date and reporting details.

One rule affects planning. Dainik Jagran English reported on 22 June 2026 that Administrator Pratham Kaushik said a mobile number cannot be reused for a Bhasma Aarti permit within 90 days, under any quota. That includes Tatkal and VIP. Our Bhasma Aarti booking guide explains how that limit works.

What we could not verify

These are the details we could not confirm from the portal or a dated source. Read the portal screen for each of them.

  • The exact booking-form fields and the ID types accepted besides Aadhaar.
  • Photo size and format.
  • The current Tatkal quota number.
  • The group size allowed in one booking.
  • Payment and session timeout lengths.
  • Any success rate, or how many seconds the quota lasts.

Some unofficial guides quote figures for these. None cites a source, so we left them out.

If Tatkal is full: a ranked backup ladder

Tatkal is one route to a darshan, not the only one. This ladder runs from the longest lead time to the shortest. Opening times come from the portal’s booking-information panel unless marked.

Option Opens Lead time Label Trade-off
Tatkal for the next day 8:00 AM, one day before that date Under 24 hours Verified Same race again. Quota is limited
Regular Bhasma Aarti release for a later date 1st of the previous month, 8:00 AM Weeks ahead Verified Needs a flexible date
Sandhya Aarti 12:00 PM daily Same day Verified; fee reported Evening aarti, not Bhasma Aarti. Press reports a fee of ₹250
Shayan Aarti 4:00 PM daily Same day Verified; fee reported Night aarti, not Bhasma Aarti. Press reports a fee of ₹250
Free walking darshan No booking Same day Reported No seated permit. Queues vary; check the temple
Daily Live Darshan and Sheeghra Darshan Listed on the portal Same day Verified listing Live view or fast-track darshan, not Bhasma Aarti

Fees in this table are from April 2026 press reports. They can change, so confirm on the portal.

How to use the ladder. If you are in Ujjain for several days, try Tatkal each morning for the following day. If you have only one night, book Sandhya Aarti or Shayan Aarti on the same day, and keep Tatkal as a bonus try. If your dates are flexible, the regular release on the 1st of the month is the stronger plan, because it gives you weeks to plan.

The Bhasma Aarti permit is separate from walking darshan, so missing out on one does not close the other. Per April 2026 reports, free walking darshan continues.

We leave stay, taxi and route planning to our sister guides. This page stays on the permit.

Quick checklist before 8:00 AM

  • Portal bookmarked and logged in.
  • Aadhaar details and a clear photo saved on your phone.
  • Payment method tested the night before.
  • One backup option picked from the ladder above.
  • No non-refundable travel booked on the hope of a Tatkal permit.

The full offline checklist, with the documents and day-of-visit steps, is in the Mahakal Playbook. It is an optional extra. Everything you need to book is on the temple portal and in this guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time does Tatkal Bhasma Aarti booking open?

The portal’s booking-information panel shows 8:00 AM, one day before the selected aarti date. Check the portal on the day, since rules can change. Claims of a 10:00 AM release appear only on unofficial pages and come with no source, so plan around 8:00 AM.

How many Tatkal permits are there for Bhasma Aarti?

Press reports in April 2026 said approximately 300 Tatkal permits a day, first come, first served. That figure is not in the portal text we read, and we could not confirm the current number. Treat it as a rough guide and read the portal on the booking day.

Is Tatkal Bhasma Aarti booking available offline?

Per April 2026 reports, no. The offline counter closed from 9 April 2026, and the permits it used to issue moved to the online Tatkal quota. Some older pages still describe offline forms. Those are out of date, so use the official portal.

Which is the official website for Tatkal booking?

The official portal is www.shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. The older shrimahakaleshwar.com address forwards to it, but it is not the address to book on. A ticket subdomain and a nic.in address named on some guides gave no response on 6 October 2026, so do not use them.

What if Tatkal Bhasma Aarti is full?

Try the next day’s Tatkal at 8:00 AM, or use the regular release, which opens on the 1st of the previous month at 8:00 AM. For the same day, Sandhya Aarti opens at 12:00 PM and Shayan Aarti at 4:00 PM. Free walking darshan is also reported to continue. None of these is certain.

Can an agent get a Tatkal Bhasma Aarti permit for me?

Booking is done on the official portal with your own mobile number and ID. Do not pay anyone who promises a permit. Ujjain Police shut nine fake Bhakt Niwas accommodation booking sites in June 2025, which shows why you should book only on the official portal.
