Who may enter it is decided by the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee, which is chaired by the Ujjain District Collector. Is Mahakal Garbh Grah Darshan Open in 2026?

No. As of the latest reports (June-July 2026), common devotees still cannot enter the Garbh Grah. A June 2026 ETV Bharat report says general devotees view the Jyotirlinga from barricades about 20 ft away, near the Nandi Hall area. No report of a reopening for the public was found in English or Hindi news from July to September 2026.

So, is the Mahakal Garbh Grah open? Not for common devotees, and it has not been for more than three years. Here is how access works, based on the reports:

Who enters: priests who perform the daily rituals, and people permitted by the competent authority (the temple administration).
Who cannot enter: general devotees, whether they hold a free queue place or a paid darshan ticket.
How general devotees see the Jyotirlinga: from outside the sanctum, through the moving queue or from barricaded viewing areas such as Nandi Hall or Ganesh Mandapam.

Many pages still describe the sanctum as it worked in 2022 or early 2023. This timeline shows what changed, in order, with the news source for each step.

The first closure was meant to last until 11 September 2023. It has not been lifted for general devotees since, and every later report up to Sawan 2026 describes the same restriction.

Who Decides Entry: What the High Court and Supreme Court Said

Many people believe a court banned sanctum entry. The reports say otherwise.

In August 2025, the Madhya Pradesh High Court (Indore Bench) dismissed a petition that asked for equal access for all devotees. As reported by Zee News, the court held that deciding who may enter the Garbh Grah is within the discretion of the Collector, who chairs the temple committee. The reported reason for the restriction was the rise in crowds after Shri Mahakal Mahalok opened.

The petitioner then went to the Supreme Court of India. On 27 January 2026, a bench of CJI Surya Kant and Justices R Mahadevan and Joymalya Bagchi refused to entertain the plea, saying it was not for the court to decide. The petition was withdrawn with liberty to make suggestions to the competent authority. You can read the Supreme Court order reported by LiveLaw. ETV Bharat reported that the CJI remarked, “Before Mahakal, nobody is VIP,” while still declining the plea.

What this means for you:

No court order bans you from the sanctum. The restriction is an administrative decision.
No court order opens it either. The courts left the matter to the temple administration.
Any change will come as an official notice from the temple committee, not from a website or an agent.

Mahakaleshwar Garbh Grah Darshan Ticket Price: Why Sites Still Show ₹750

There is no current public Mahakaleshwar Garbh Grah darshan ticket price. No sanctum ticket is sold to general devotees, as of the latest reports. Yet many pages still list ₹750 per person, ₹1,500 per couple, and exact entry hours, often under a “2026” title.

These numbers are real, but they are old. Each one can be traced to 2022 or early 2023:

What about Mahakal Garbh Grah darshan booking online? The online sanctum booking and the ₹1,500 system were suspended in 2023 (Amar Ujala, October 2023). In 2024 the Collector said there is no arrangement to take ₹750 for entry. As of the latest reports, no online booking for the sanctum is offered.

Some pages also send readers to websites that are not the official portal while calling them “official”. The official portal is shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in. If a page quotes a sanctum price with no dated source, treat it as out of date.

What You Can Book Instead (2026 Fees)

You cannot enter the sanctum, but you can still have darshan of the Jyotirlinga. These are the options named in 2026 reports. None of them includes sanctum entry.

For Sandhya and Shayan seated darshan, last entry was 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM, as of April 2026 reports. The same reports say free moving darshan remains available. At Mahashivratri 2026, reports say the quick darshan route ran through a tunnel to Ganesh Mandapam.

If your main wish is to offer water, the jal patra arrangement is the closest option. During Sawan 2026, vessels in the Sabha Mandap and Kartik Mandapam carried devotees’ water to the Jyotirlinga. Reports confirm this for Sawan 2026 only, so check whether it is arranged on your date.

Does the Bhasma Aarti pass let you enter the Garbh Grah?

How to Avoid Garbh Grah Ticket Scams

We cannot get you into the Garbh Grah, and nobody legitimate can sell you a ticket for it. The biggest risk for visitors is the fake paid sanctum ticket itself. Watch for these red flags:

Any change to garbh grah darshan in Ujjain will come only through an official notice from the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee. Until then, use these steps:

Check the notices on the official portal, shrimahakaleshwar.mp.gov.in, a few days before your trip.
Call the toll-free number 18002331008 and ask about sanctum access on your date.
At the temple, ask only at official counters, never at private stalls or with people who approach you.
Check again close to festivals such as Sawan, Mahashivratri and Nag Panchami, when special arrangements are announced.
