The story behind Mahakal
The Shiva Purana tells of a demon Dushana who attacked Ujjain. Lord Shiva emerged from the earth as Mahakal (the great destroyer of time) and killed the demon. The form remained at the spot as the Jyotirlinga. The temple was first mentioned in the Mahabharata.
