Ujjain to Omkareshwar: Distance, Taxi, Train & 1-Day Plan

Ujjain to Omkareshwar is about 140 km (3 hours by road). Full 2026 guide from a local: taxi fares, trains, buses and a tested one-day two-Jyotirlinga itinerary.

Two of India’s twelve Jyotirlingas — Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain and Omkareshwar on the Narmada — sit close enough that thousands of pilgrims do both in a single trip. I live in Ujjain and have made this run more times than I can count, dropping family and friends to Omkareshwar and back. Here is exactly how to plan it in 2026, with real distances, fares and a one-day plan that actually works.

Ujjain to Omkareshwar distance & travel time

Mode Distance Time
By road (car/taxi via Sanwer–Kedareshwar) ~140 km 2 hr 45 min – 3 hr 15 min
By road (via Indore) ~155 km 3 hr – 3 hr 30 min
By train (to Omkareshwar Road / Mortakka) ~120 km rail 3 – 4 hr + 12 km cab

The straight road route through Sanwer is the one every local driver takes. It avoids Indore city traffic and is the fastest.

By taxi or private car (what most pilgrims choose)

A one-way drop is rarely worth it because Omkareshwar has limited return taxis. Book a round trip from Ujjain instead. Typical 2026 rates I see from Ujjain travel desks:

  • Sedan (Dzire/Etios, 4 seats): ₹3,000–₹3,800 round trip, same day
  • SUV (Ertiga, 6–7 seats): ₹4,200–₹5,500 round trip
  • Innova (comfort): ₹5,500–₹7,000 round trip

These usually include driver, fuel and a ~4–5 hour halt at Omkareshwar. Confirm toll and parking are included before you pay. Always fix the price in writing and pay a part-advance only.

By train

There is no direct station at Omkareshwar town. The nearest railheads are Omkareshwar Road (Mortakka), about 12 km away, and Khandwa, about 70 km. From Ujjain you typically change at Indore. Trains are cheap (₹60–₹200) but slower and then you still need a local auto/taxi for the last 12 km, so most families prefer road.

By bus

State and private buses run Ujjain–Indore frequently (1–1.5 hr), and from Indore’s Sarwate/Gangwal stand you get buses toward Omkareshwar/Barwaha. Budget option, but expect 4+ hours and changes. Good only if you are travelling solo and light.

A tested one-day plan (Mahakal + Omkareshwar)

  1. 4:00–6:00 AM — Attend Bhasma Aarti or early Mahakal darshan in Ujjain. (See our Mahakal timings guide.)
  2. 7:00 AM — Breakfast, then start the drive by 7:30.
  3. 10:15–10:45 AM — Reach Omkareshwar. Park and walk to the ghat.
  4. Late morning — Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga darshan on the Mandhata island. Cross by the bridge or take a short boat.
  5. Midday — Mamleshwar temple (across the river), a dip or aachman at the Narmada, and lunch.
  6. 2:30–3:00 PM — Start back; reach Ujjain by ~6 PM for evening Sandhya Aarti if you wish.

What to see at Omkareshwar

  • Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga on the sacred Om-shaped Mandhata island.
  • Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) temple — many believe the true Jyotirlinga darshan is complete only with both.
  • Narmada ghats — boating and aarti; the river here is wide and calm.
  • Statue of Adi Shankaracharya and the caves where he is said to have met his guru.

Local tips

  • Weekends and Mondays (Shravan) are crowded — leave Ujjain before dawn.
  • Carry cash; card/UPI is patchy at smaller stalls near the ghat.
  • Wear grippy footwear — the island steps get slippery near the water.
  • Deposit phones/leather at the counter before the sanctum.
